The Power of Words

We cannot afford to underestimate the importance and power of our words. The book of Proverbs reminds us that "the tongue has the power of life and death" (Proverbs 18:21).

Remember the schoolyard comeback, "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me." It's a lie. Unkind words do injure - sometimes deeply. Being yelled at or called a name like stupid or idiot, can inflict a wound that will fester for years.

Derogatory names like stupid, lazy, idiot, jerk, dumb, or cry baby are used to make a partner feel small and worthless.

Extreme verbal abuse makes its victims feel small and powerless. They feel weak and helpless as individuals to change their circumstances. After living in a situation where nothing changes no matter what they do, they slowly give up. They begin to stop caring and start to lose heart.
